What does an Illustrator do? (ages 4 to adult)

So what does an illustrator do all day? How do you come up with ideas? How do the pictures get into the books? During this presentation the entire process of creating a picture book is explored, from getting the contract to the finished product. Props will include an illustrator's marketing materials, to the actual art process including thumbnails (tiny rough sketches), first draft sketches and revisions, dummy book, F&G's (you'll learn more about what this is during the presentation) actual paintings, and the final book. In order to get personally familiar with the illustration process, a hands on activity will involve the audience to come up with their own illustration of a topic.

Curriculum friendly for:
Language Arts, Social Studies, The Arts

Equipment Needed: Computer, LCD projector, screen, table
Presentation Duration: Depending on requirements and age range of audience

How do pictures work? (ages 4 to adult)

Why does an illustrator draw the things that she does? Analyze the power of the pictures that complement the author’s words and often tell so much more about the characters and story than the actual words.
