The Adventures of Salt & Soap at Grand Canyon (ages 4 to adult)

Salt and Soap as Puppies

The Adventures of Salt and Soap at Grand Canyon
is the true story of two puppies that wandered into the Grand Canyon and experienced great adventures in the grandest of all canyons—multiple rim-to-river hikes, camping in raging thunderstorms, a river trip on the mighty Colorado and a helicopter ride out of the canyon’s depths — while ultimately snuggling their way into park rangers’ and visitors’ hearts. These stray pups found a home at the edge of the Grand Canyon. During this multi-media presentation, Tanja will share Salt and Soap's story, share photos of them then and now, talk about the remarkable diversity of the Grand Canyon and delve into the process of creating the artwork that makes up the picture book and explore the journey that Salt and Soap experienced in a visual way.

What does an Illustrator do? (ages 4 to adult)

So what does an illustrator do all day? How do you come up with ideas? How do the pictures get into the books? During this presentation the entire process of creating a picture book is explored, from getting the contract to the finished product. Props will include an illustrator's marketing materials, to the actual art process including thumbnails (tiny rough sketches), first draft sketches and revisions, dummy book, F&G's (you'll learn more about what this is during the presentation) actual paintings, and the final book. In order to get personally familiar with the illustration process, a hands on activity will involve the audience to come up with their own illustration of a topic.
